ECZEMA

WHAT IS ECZEMA?
Eczema is a common skin condition that is marked by dry patches of itchy skin. The condition may worsen if the affected skin is irritated or scratched. Eczema can occur on any part of the body. When the skin is repeatedly scratched, the skin may become thick and resemble leather.

Eczema is an immune system response to external factors such as soaps, body washes, perfume, clothing, and maybe even the weather. Many people with allergies will also have eczema. It is not contagious, but may be linked to a genetic predisposition.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA?

Eczema can appear differently on each person. Some people experience intense itching while others just see flaky, dry skin. For those with itching, the eczema can be very bothersome as the itching worsens and may cause a secondary infection to form. If repeatedly scratched, the eczematous skin may become crusty or "ooze."

SHOULD I VISIT MY SKIN SPECIALIST TO HAVE MY ECZEMA EXAMINED?

It is always best to have eczema examined by a dermatologist. Although eczema is not usually considered an emergency condition, it can worsen and cause extreme discomfort.
There are many different existing treatment options available to treat eczema, including prescription topical emollients. Talk to your dermatologist about possible treatment options that may work for your particular skin type and disease.

It is especially important to get medical attention immediately if you have a fever and a rash with red streaks that causes pain.
